Panthers agree to contract with Pro Bowl tight end

The Carolina Panthers have reportedly signed tight end Darren Waller to a one-year contract, bolstering their offensive options. Waller, a former sixth-round draft pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2015, gained prominence during his time with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders, where he achieved career highs in 2020 with 107 receptions, 1,196 receiving yards, and nine touchdowns. After a brief retirement, he returned in 2025 to play for the Miami Dolphins, recording 24 catches for 283 yards and six touchdowns in nine games. At 33 years old, Waller joins a tight end group that includes Tommy Tremble, Mitchell Evans, and Ja’Tavion Sanders, who have yet to exceed 350 receiving yards in any season over their combined eight-year careers.

Why It Matters

Adding Waller provides the Panthers with a proven playmaker at the tight end position, an area where they have struggled for production. Historically, Waller has demonstrated elite receiving ability, particularly during his breakout seasons, making him one of the more accomplished tight ends in recent NFL history. His presence may significantly enhance the Panthers’ offensive capabilities, especially given the limited achievements of their current tight ends. This move also reflects the Panthers’ strategy to strengthen their roster as they prepare for upcoming seasons in a highly competitive league.
