Palestinians build new lives in Cairo’s ‘Little Gaza’

Palestinian Bassem Abu Aoun opens a restaurant in Cairo serving Gaza-style turkey shawarma, joining other businesses in the area dubbed “Little Gaza” by fleeing war survivors. Despite losing everything in Gaza, he took a gamble and opened Hay al-Rimal, offering refuge and a livelihood to the traumatised community. Over 120,000 Palestinians arrived in Egypt after escaping the conflict, seeking temporary stays and opportunities to start anew through businesses like Abu Aoun’s eatery and Kanaan Kazem’s dessert shop, reflecting the resilience and adaptability of those rebuilding their lives in a new environment.
