Swiss Bar Owners Detained in New Year Fire Investigation

Jacques Moretti, co-owner of the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana where a fire claimed 40 lives on New Year’s Day, has been arrested amid allegations of involuntary homicide and related charges, with prosecutors citing a flight risk. His wife, Jessica Moretti, is under house arrest as they both express grief for the victims and pledge cooperation with the investigation. The fire injured 116 people, predominantly teenagers, prompting a national day of mourning in Switzerland. Local authorities acknowledged the bar had not been inspected since 2019, leading to public apologies from the mayor of Crans-Montana.
