Opinion: Bad tobacco settlement means better laws are urgently needed

The decades-long provincial government lawsuits against the tobacco industry are nearing an end as governments have unanimously approved a settlement agreement that releases the companies from further claims. The deal, pending approval by an Ontario court starting on Jan. 29, will bring closure to corporate wrongdoing if tobacco companies do not challenge the mediator’s plan.
