OpenAI to report credible threats following discovery of mass shooter’s second account

OpenAI will enhance its safety protocols and promptly inform law enforcement of credible threats, as outlined in a letter to Canadian authorities. This follows backlash for not alerting police about a mass shooting suspect’s banned account in 2025. The company plans to improve its detection systems to prevent banned users from rejoining and will notify authorities of imminent threats detected in ChatGPT conversations. OpenAI is also establishing a direct contact for Canadian law enforcement to facilitate information sharing.
