OpenAI to revise Defense Department agreement to limit mass surveillance

OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman announced that the company will modify its agreement with the Defense Department to explicitly prohibit the use of its AI systems for domestic surveillance of U.S. citizens, in line with legal frameworks like the Fourth Amendment. This change comes amidst pressures on competitor Anthropic, which has resisted demands to remove safeguards for its AI. Following OpenAI’s deal announcement, Anthropic’s app surged in popularity, leading to a significant increase in uninstalls of ChatGPT.
