In January 1969, an oil spill off Santa Barbara led to over three million gallons of crude oil contaminating California’s coastline, igniting the environmental movement and contributing to the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. Today, Earth Day is observed in over 190 countries, with approximately one billion participants. This week, the Goldman Environmental Prize recognized six women activists for their significant victories in environmental protection, highlighting the ongoing, often dangerous struggle faced by many grassroots defenders.
