What You Need to Know
• Oman is addressing an oil spill covering nearly 400 square kilometers from a stranded tanker.
• The tanker Caroline Bezengi has been stuck near Oman’s al-Qibliyyah Island since early June.
• Greenpeace estimates the spill could lead to an environmental disaster, with one million barrels of crude onboard.

Oman is currently managing an oil spill off its southern coast, which spans almost 400 square kilometers, originating from the tanker Caroline Bezengi. The Oman Environment Authority reported that the spill is located approximately 7 kilometers from the coast. The Caroline Bezengi, which loaded oil at Russia’s Black Sea port of Novorossiysk in April, has been stranded since early June after an explosion caused water to breach the vessel. Environmental group Greenpeace has warned that the spill, which they estimate at around 600 square kilometers, poses a significant threat to the Hallaniyat archipelago’s marine ecosystems, including rare sea turtles. Omani authorities are developing a plan to transfer the oil cargo to mitigate risks and protect the marine environment.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights the ongoing environmental risks associated with maritime oil transport, particularly in sensitive ecological areas. The Caroline Bezengi is believed to be part of Russia’s “shadow fleet,” which operates to bypass Western sanctions on oil exports. The spill’s proximity to the Hallaniyat archipelago, a recently designated marine reserve, raises concerns about the impact on biodiversity and marine habitats. The situation underscores the need for effective maritime safety measures and environmental protection strategies in regions vulnerable to oil spills.
