Ohio State Football Alumni to Join Strauss Sex Abuse Lawsuit

Thirty former members of Ohio State’s football program, including notable alumni Ray Ellis, Al Washington, and Keith Ferguson, are joining the lawsuit against the university related to alleged sexual abuse by former sports medicine physician Richard Strauss. This announcement marks the first time high-profile Buckeyes athletes have publicly accused Strauss of misconduct. While over 520 former Ohio State students have already filed lawsuits linked to Strauss since 2018, the addition of these football players adds significant weight to the ongoing litigation. Strauss, who served as a physician from 1978 to 1996, was previously associated mainly with wrestlers, with investigations revealing that only three football players provided firsthand accounts of his misconduct. Washington, who has been vocal about the university’s handling of the Strauss case, stated that he wants to help protect future athletes and restore the integrity of Ohio State football. The plaintiffs will join existing cases in the Gonzales v. Ohio State matter, with a bellwether trial scheduled for October.

Why It Matters

The allegations against Richard Strauss represent one of the most significant sexual abuse scandals in Ohio State’s history, impacting the university’s reputation and raising questions about athlete safety. Since Strauss’s death in 2005, the university has faced numerous lawsuits, resulting in settlements totaling $61 million for over 300 plaintiffs, yet many claims remain unresolved. The involvement of prominent former athletes underscores the depth of the issue and the ongoing demand for accountability from Ohio State’s administration. As the litigation progresses, it may reveal systemic failures in how the university managed reports of sexual misconduct, particularly in its athletic programs.
