Sealord and Skipper Fined for Medical Neglect at Sea

A solemn karakia commenced the sentencing of a deep-sea skipper, Eru Puata, and his employer following the death of a fisherman at sea near the Chatham Islands on June 21, 2022. The 47-year-old man died from peritonitis due to a perforated duodenal ulcer, having been unwell for days. Puata failed to recognize the seriousness of the situation and dismissed crew members who attempted to alert him to the man’s deteriorating condition.
