Firefighters are currently combating a large bushfire in Tongariro National Park, New Zealand, which has spread to over 1000 hectares. Efforts began on Saturday, resulting in the airlift of around 40 hikers to safety, although firefighting was paused overnight due to safety concerns. Assistant Commander Nick West reported an increase in fire size and stated that aerial reconnaissance will assess the situation. Six fire trucks, five tankers, and aerial support including helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft are being deployed to manage the blaze.
