Nunavik reports record tuberculosis cases in 2025 amid ongoing concerns

After losing his partner to tuberculosis (TB) in February, Tumassi Anauta has become a single father to three children, urging his community in Nunavik to take the illness seriously. Anauta and his partner were diagnosed with latent TB, which can become active if untreated. Despite the straightforward treatment available today, Anauta emphasizes the potential severity of the disease, recounting his initial dismissal of the situation. In Akulivik, where Anauta resides, there have been about 20 active TB cases as of June, part of a troubling trend across Nunavik where the total number of cases has risen annually for the last five years. The Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services has been conducting screenings in the community, but mistrust in the healthcare system and historical practices continue to hinder effective treatment and prevention efforts.

Why It Matters

The resurgence of tuberculosis in Nunavik highlights a public health crisis exacerbated by historical mistreatment of Indigenous populations, particularly during the 1950s and 1960s when many Inuit were forcibly relocated for TB treatment. Recent data shows an alarming increase in cases, with 60 reported this year alone, following a record high of 116 cases in the previous year. The growing outbreak reflects systemic issues, such as limited healthcare resources and distrust in health authorities, which stem from past experiences. Addressing these challenges requires culturally sensitive and community-based healthcare approaches to rebuild trust and effectively combat the disease.
