Fourth-century coin and inscriptions discovered beneath Notre Dame cathedral

Wilting in the summer sun, tourists line up to visit Notre Dame Cathedral while, just below them, archaeologists excavate the site, uncovering artifacts from as far back as Roman Paris, 2,000 years ago. Following the devastating fire in 2019 that led to the cathedral’s spire collapsing, Notre Dame was reconstructed and reopened in late 2024. To enhance the area in front of the cathedral with trees and shade, excavation is necessary to prevent damage to historical layers beneath the ground. Dubbed the “dig of the century” by French media, archaeologists have already uncovered a fourth-century coin featuring Emperor Constantine and medieval pottery with undeciphered markings, as they delve deeper into the history layered beneath the soil. This excavation site, located just a few steps from the tourist line, reveals centuries of Parisian history, with significant finds emerging from ancient latrines.

Why It Matters

Excavations around Notre Dame Cathedral highlight the complex historical layers present in ancient cities, where each generation builds upon the remnants of the past. Paris’s Ile de la Cité, where the cathedral stands, is a key historical site, reflecting the city’s evolution over millennia. The ongoing discoveries not only contribute to the understanding of Paris’s social and economic history but also emphasize the importance of archaeological preservation in urban development. Similar digs in other cities, such as Rome and Athens, have yielded valuable insights into ancient urban life, illustrating the interconnectedness of historical sites and contemporary infrastructure projects.
