North Korea updates on nuclear submarine progress

North Korea is making progress on a nuclear-powered submarine, as images released by state media show a largely completed hull of an 8,700-ton-class vessel inspected by leader Kim Jong Un. Kim views the submarine as a crucial element in strengthening the country’s nuclear deterrent against perceived threats, particularly from South Korea’s efforts to acquire a similar submarine. Experts believe the submarine may be close to completion, with key components likely already installed, potentially allowing for sea trials within months. The development of advanced weapons, including nuclear-powered submarines, solid-fuelled ICBMs, and hypersonic weapons, reflects North Korea’s continued focus on enhancing its military capabilities despite tensions on the Korean Peninsula and stalled negotiations with the US and South Korea.
