North Korea has provided Moscow with long-range rocket and artillery systems, including self-propelled howitzers and multiple launch rocket systems, which have been moved to Russia’s Kursk region for an assault involving North Korean soldiers against Ukrainian forces. This marks an expansion of North Korea’s support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The weapons deliveries come at a crucial time as both armies fight for territorial advantage before the inauguration of Donald Trump. The North Korean troops, numbering around 10,000, are expected to be used in combat alongside Russian forces. Despite losing significant territory, Ukraine is trying to hold on to the 600 sq km still under its control as leverage in negotiations with Russia. The conflict has resulted in heavy casualties for Russia, with an estimated 1,500 dead and injured daily in October. North Korean troops are expected to play a tactical role in the upcoming Russian operation in Kursk.
