North Korea fired several ballistic missiles into the sea, South Korea’s fifth missile launch event this year, following the start of joint drills with the U.S. South Korea bolstered surveillance and is coordinating closely with the U.S., while North Korea warned of “physical conflict” over the drills and reiterated leader Kim Jong Un’s nuclear force expansion goals. South Korea and the U.S. paused live-fire exercises after two fighter jets mistakenly bombed a civilian area, causing injuries and property damage, with investigations ongoing before resuming training.
