Nine in ten families in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan are facing food insecurity as the country struggles to accommodate 4.5 million returnees since 2023, worsened by aid cuts and sanctions. A UNDP report reveals that over half of returnee households are forgoing medical care for food and accumulating significant debt, with housing shortages and tripled rents compounding their difficulties. Women, who are increasingly becoming primary breadwinners, face severe restrictions that limit their economic participation. The UN has called for urgent support to improve livelihoods and services in high-return areas to mitigate the crisis.
