Niger’s military rulers expand emergency powers, warning that people, property, and services may be requisitioned.
Niger’s military government has announced a general mobilization, allowing for the requisition of people and goods to combat armed groups following a cabinet meeting. This escalation comes after the military coup in July 2023 that ousted President Bazoum. The government emphasized the necessity of these measures to protect national integrity amid ongoing violence from groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS, resulting in nearly 2,000 deaths. Niger is enhancing security collaboration with Mali and Burkina Faso while distancing itself from Western military support.
