The Independent has been shortlisted for an award for its powerful investigations into abuse in NHS mental health hospitals, where tens of thousands of incidents were reported but only a small percentage were referred to the police. Almost 20,000 reports were made in the past five years in over half of mental health trusts, as revealed in a joint investigation with Sky News. The public can vote for the best campaign during the Journalism Matters campaign from 28 October to 3 November, with national and local winners to be announced later in the week.
