The trade surprised the NHL due to Rantanen’s offensive prowess and pending free agent status. Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky was active in trade talks, including discussions with the Vancouver Canucks for Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller. Carolina ultimately acquired Rantanen and Hall, while Colorado received Martin Necas, Jack Drury, and draft picks in return.
