NFL rookie departs team to pursue acting career

The Cincinnati Bengals have signed defensive back Ceyair Wright as an undrafted free agent after his college career at Nebraska. However, Wright has chosen to leave the team to pursue opportunities in acting and was placed on the Exempt/Left Squad list. Bengals head coach Zac Taylor acknowledged the difficulty of Wright’s decision while expressing support for his pursuit of a career in television and film. Wright has previous acting credits, including playing LeBron James’ son in “Space Jam: A New Legacy” and roles in “Grown-ish” and “2 Broke Girls.” The Bengals have since signed Matthew McDoom to fill the vacancy left by Wright.

Why It Matters

Wright’s departure highlights the intersection of professional sports and entertainment, particularly as athletes increasingly explore careers outside of sports. His previous roles demonstrate that many athletes have diverse interests and skills, allowing them to transition into different fields after their sporting careers. The signing of Matthew McDoom reflects the Bengals’ strategy to maintain their roster depth while adapting to player changes. Additionally, the trend of athletes pursuing acting careers suggests a growing acceptance of multifaceted identities in professional sports.
