NFL Adopts Sony's 'Virtual Measurements' for Football's First Downs

America’s National Football League will utilize Sony’s Hawk-Eye virtual measurement technology starting in 2025 to determine first downs after a ball spot. The technology, operated from the NFL’s officiating center in New York, consists of six 8K cameras for accurate tracking. The move aims to enhance officiating efficiency by providing a faster and more precise alternative to the traditional chain crew method, while still keeping the crew on the field in a secondary capacity.
