Newsom vetoes bill to study reparations for displaced Chavez Ravine families

Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed the Chavez Ravine Accountability Act, which aimed to establish a task force to study reparations for families displaced from Chavez Ravine in the 1950s. Sponsored by Assemblywoman Wendy Carrillo, the bill would have examined the long-term harms suffered by residents, business owners, and landowners forced out of the area between 1950 and 1961 and advised on compensation. Newsom’s decision means that the state-level task force will not be created to address the historical injustices faced by those affected by the redevelopment of Chavez Ravine.
