A 35-year-old woman from Deer Park, New York, named Keyonna Waddell, was convicted of first-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon after she threw a homemade stick of dynamite at her sleeping boyfriend, resulting in the amputation of his hand. The jury reached its verdict following an incident on March 22, 2024, where Waddell previously threatened the victim with explosives multiple times. After a heated argument, the victim returned home to find Waddell absent and went to sleep. He awoke to a hissing noise, discovered the dynamite, and attempted to throw it out the window, but it detonated and severely injured him. Waddell was arrested the next day, and her sentencing is set for May 27, where she faces up to 25 years in prison.

Why It Matters

This case highlights the extreme dangers of domestic violence, which can escalate to life-threatening situations. The use of explosives in domestic disputes is rare but underscores the potential for serious harm in abusive relationships. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the U.S., emphasizing the urgent need for awareness and intervention in such cases. The legal consequences faced by Waddell serve as a reminder of the accountability that can follow acts of violence.
