New Study Finds Link Between ADHD Symptoms in Teen Boys and Social Media Use

A study from the University of California at San Francisco has found a link between increased addictive social media use and heightened ADHD symptoms in adolescents, particularly among boys. Over five years, researchers monitored more than 11,000 U.S. adolescents, starting at an average age of 12. They observed that boys who reported higher levels of social media use at ages 14 and 15 exhibited increased ADHD symptoms the following year. Conversely, the study did not find evidence that ADHD symptoms led to greater social media use. Lead author Jason Nagata emphasized the importance for parents to assess their children’s social media habits and its impact on their daily lives. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately 7 million American children aged 3 to 17 have been diagnosed with ADHD, with boys being diagnosed at nearly double the rate of girls.

Why It Matters

This study contributes to a growing body of research highlighting the potential adverse effects of social media on youth, particularly during critical developmental stages. ADHD is a prevalent diagnosis among children, with boys experiencing it at higher rates, which raises concerns about the impact of digital engagement on attention and cognitive function. As social media platforms are designed to capture users’ attention through constant stimulation and rewards, understanding this relationship is crucial for developing strategies to mitigate potential negative effects on mental health and academic performance in adolescents. The findings underscore the need for parents to model healthy screen time behaviors, as their usage patterns significantly influence their children’s habits.
