Fritz Alphonse Jean, an economist and former central bank governor, has been sworn in as the new leader of the transitional presidential council in Haiti, replacing Leslie Voltaire. Amid ongoing gang violence, Jean described the situation as a “war” and called for unity to address the security crisis. The council, working with Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, is tasked with organizing general elections in February 2026, while the U.N. has proposed providing support to the Kenyan-led mission in the country where gang control is rampant, resulting in over 5,600 reported deaths in 2024.
