New ICE facility may expedite deportations for families and children

The Trump administration is set to establish a new 528-bed holding facility for migrant families and unaccompanied children in Alexandria, Louisiana, near an airport hub, aimed at expediting deportations. This facility is intended to alleviate logistical challenges associated with transporting minors from various locations to deportation flights. Although U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) describes it as a “staging area” for migrants awaiting deportation, concerns have been raised by immigration advocates about the potential for children to be held longer than the proposed 72-hour limit. The facility, which will be run by a nonprofit arm of LaSalle Corrections, is positioned to expedite migrant processing; however, advocates emphasize that oversight and humane treatment are paramount. ICE has stipulated that families should not be referred to as prisoners and should have some autonomy, such as wearing their own clothes during their stay.

Why It Matters

The establishment of the Alexandria holding facility highlights ongoing changes in the U.S. immigration enforcement landscape, particularly regarding the treatment of families and children. Historically, unaccompanied minors were placed in state-licensed shelters and foster care, but this facility operates outside of those guidelines, potentially impacting the care and legal rights of those detained. In 2025 alone, over 4,400 immigration enforcement flights were recorded at the nearby Alexandria International Airport, illustrating the facility’s role in the broader deportation system. The involvement of private prison contractors in operating the facility raises questions about accountability and the welfare of detainees, especially given past incidents of overcrowding and inadequate conditions in similar facilities.
