Texas surpasses California in new Fortune 500 rankings; Amazon leads ahead of Walmart

Texas has surpassed California as the state with the most Fortune 500 companies, with 57 companies headquartered in Texas compared to California’s 56. This marks a shift from 2022, when California held the top position. Despite this change, California remains a powerhouse in terms of revenue, profitability, and workforce, with its Fortune 500 companies generating a combined $647 billion and employing 2.8 million people. The state continues to lead in innovation, particularly in artificial intelligence and technology sectors, and hosts nearly 400 “unicorn” startups, more than any other state. In the latest rankings, Amazon has claimed the top spot on the Fortune 500 list, ending Walmart’s 13-year reign, with revenues of $716.9 billion compared to Walmart’s $713.2 billion.

Why It Matters

This change in Fortune 500 leadership reflects broader economic trends, as companies evaluate factors like tax rates, cost of living, and regulatory environments when choosing headquarters. Texas has become increasingly attractive to businesses seeking lower taxes and fewer regulations, while California maintains its strength through high profitability and innovative capabilities. Historically, California has been the top state for Fortune 500 companies, but Texas’s recent growth indicates a shifting landscape in U.S. corporate headquarters. This competition could influence future business relocations and the overall economic dynamics between the two states.
