New Australian video game classifications aim to restrict kids’ exposure to loot boxes

Starting from September 22, Australia will be overhauling video game classifications to address “gambling-like” content, including loot boxes, in popular games such as NBA2K and EA Football Club. The changes to the Guidelines for the Classification of Computer Games 2023 introduce two new mandatory classifications for games with elements of chance, ensuring compliance for titles like Madden and others. These updates aim to reduce exposure to potentially harmful content and create a safer gaming environment for Australian consumers.
