The NCAA’s Division I council has approved a ruling that allows Canadian junior hockey players to participate in professional teams and leagues before full-time collegiate enrollment, as long as they only receive necessary expenses. This decision opens up opportunities for players from the Western Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League, and Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League to join NCAA Division I teams. Josh Whitman, chair of the council, views this as a positive move towards aligning skiing and men’s hockey with other sports in terms of allowable pre-enrolment activities.
