Mullivaikkal, Sri Lanka – On May 18, thousands of Tamils, including Krishnan Anjan Jeevarani, gathered in Mullivaikkal to commemorate the 16th anniversary of the end of the Sri Lankan civil war, marking the site of its final battle. While the new government led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has allowed memorials to proceed without significant obstruction, many community members express mixed feelings regarding the administration’s progress on promises related to justice and reconciliation, particularly regarding allegations of genocide. Despite some improvements, concerns remain over the government’s continued use of controversial laws and dismissive rhetoric towards Tamil claims of genocide.
