Nebraska’s Transgender Sports Ban
Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen signed a law banning transgender students from participating in girls’ sports, following a contentious legislative process that passed by a narrow vote. The measure, which was initially broader but stripped of provisions regarding bathrooms and locker rooms, was backed by proponents who argue it protects women’s sports, while opponents, including the ACLU of Nebraska, claim it discriminates against transgender students. With fewer than 10 transgender students in the state’s sports programs, critics argue the ban addresses a non-existent issue.
