Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, was charged with shooting two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., on November 26, yelling “Allahu akbar!” during the attack, which resulted in the death of 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom and severe injuries to 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe. Lakanwal, who drove from Bellingham, WA, armed with a .357-caliber revolver, pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including murder. He was subdued by a witness after being struck by return fire from a Guard supervisor. The Department of Justice plans to seek the death penalty for Lakanwal, who entered the U.S. under Operation Allies Welcome in September 2021.
