NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is conserving energy on Voyager probes in interstellar space by shutting down instruments like the cosmic ray subsystem on Voyager 1 and the low-energy charged particle experiment on Voyager 2. Launched in 1977, the probes have been using a radioisotope power system that is running out of fuel, leading to the shutdown of various instruments to extend the missions. Despite these energy-saving measures, NASA expects to have to turn off more instruments in about a year.
