NASA to use high-tech Prada long johns for lunar missions

Axiom Space, in collaboration with Prada, has unveiled the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG), designed for NASA astronauts. This garment will serve as a crucial base layer beneath the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit, set to be utilized during the Artemis IV mission, which aims to return humans to the Moon in 2028. The LCVG features a cooling system that circulates cold water through embedded tubes to manage body heat, along with a backup cooling system for redundancy. Additionally, it includes a ventilation mechanism that supplies fresh oxygen to the helmet while directing exhaled carbon dioxide to a scrubber for recycling. This innovative design reflects a blend of high-performance technology and fashion.

Why It Matters

The development of the LCVG highlights the increasing intersection of fashion and technology in space exploration. Axiom Space’s partnership with Prada adds a layer of modern design to the technical demands of space suits, which have historically been utilitarian. NASA has previously funded projects that merge advanced materials with innovative designs, such as the BioSuit concept by MIT. This collaboration underscores the importance of comfort and functionality in astronaut gear, particularly for extended missions on the lunar surface as part of NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon.
