Auckland trial starts for three men accused of rape

In the early hours of New Year’s Day 2025, three young men allegedly abducted a heavily intoxicated 19-year-old German backpacker from Auckland’s Karangahape Rd, driving her to a remote location in Avondale. Prosecutors described the incident as a “devastating ordeal,” involving a pack rape, which was partially captured on CCTV. After the assault, the men reportedly returned her to the city center, leaving her in distress outside her hostel. The trial for the accused has commenced in the High Court at Auckland.
