A 16-year-old from Porirua, Ashen, has returned home after being hospitalized in Bali due to bacterial meningitis contracted from undercooked meat during a family holiday. Initially placed in a coma because of severe brain swelling, Ashen has since recovered enough to travel back to New Zealand with his family, including his parents, Sheena and Ants. A Givealittle fundraising page was established by a family friend to support Ashen’s family in staying by his side during his treatment. The family faced a challenging return home, now focusing on Ashen’s ongoing health management and the transition back to their daily lives.
