A New Brunswick judge sentenced 72-year-old Howard Joseph Cunningham to house arrest after he ran down and seriously injured 18-year-old Theodore Curran, who had rung his doorbell as part of a prank known as “Nicky Nicky Nine Door.” The Crown had sought a two-year jail sentence, but the Court of King’s Bench determined Cunningham’s actions were provoked and granted a conditional sentence instead, noting his lack of planning and expression of remorse. Aggravating factors included Curran’s severe injuries and Cunningham’s failure to stop and assist the victim after the incident.
