Music from parade trucks damages ancient museum artefacts

Music from a parade in Chaiyaphum, northeastern Thailand, caused significant damage to the Chaiyaphum Ancient Textile Museum on April 22. The museum’s owner, Dr. Komkrich Ritkhachorn, reported that the loud sounds from approximately 100 parade trucks equipped with large speakers rattled display cases, leading to shattered pottery and damaged exhibits. Images from the scene showed broken artifacts on the museum floor, with several displays left nearly empty. Dr. Ritkhachorn expressed concern over the impact of the loud event on cultural heritage, questioning whether the celebration’s noise level could be moderated to prevent damage. The parade, which honors Chao Pho Phaya Lae, a historical figure, featured over 150 floats and was part of a longer celebration.

Why It Matters

This incident underscores the potential risks that local cultural heritage sites face during community celebrations. While parades and festivities are essential for cultural expression, the balance between celebrating and preserving historical artifacts is crucial. Museums often prepare for natural disasters but may not account for the effects of noise and vibrations from nearby events. This situation highlights the need for better planning and coordination between event organizers and museums to protect valuable cultural assets while maintaining community traditions.
