Adam Johnson, 26, and Kylie Smith, 25, from St Helens, have been charged with causing or allowing the death of their one-year-old son, Maero Johnson. The charges follow a tragic incident on August 23, 2023, when police were called after Maero was taken to the hospital, where he later died despite medical efforts. A Home Office postmortem examination revealed that he died from ketonic hypoglycaemia and severe malnutrition. In addition to charges related to their son’s death, the couple has also been charged with child neglect and possession of cannabis. They are scheduled to appear in Liverpool Magistrates Court on August 13.

Why It Matters

This case highlights significant issues surrounding child welfare and parental responsibility. Malnutrition and neglect in children can have devastating, long-term effects on their health and development. According to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), neglect is one of the most common forms of child abuse, affecting thousands of children in the UK each year. The legal outcomes of such cases can serve as a critical deterrent and raise awareness about the importance of safeguarding children in vulnerable situations.
