Multikernel Linux Tree Released for Running Multiple Kernels on Bare Metal

Multikernel Technologies has released mklinux v7.0-mk2, marking the first public version of its multikernel Linux tree developed since last year. This innovative project allows a single physical server to run multiple independent Linux kernels simultaneously, each with its own allocated CPUs and memory. This means that diverse tasks, such as database operations and GPU training, can be handled by separate kernels without interference. One kernel acts as the host, managing resources and utilizing Linux’s kexec mechanism to boot additional kernels directly onto dedicated hardware. The system’s architecture differs from traditional virtual machines and containers, as it avoids hypervisors and allows for hardware resource management without downtime. Currently, the release is limited to x86_64 hardware, with plans for broader architecture support in the future. Multikernel Technologies is also offering products based on this kernel tree, including solutions for AI applications with direct GPU access and live kernel patching capabilities.
