Head of Swiss Euthanasia Firm Dies While Climbing Mount Fuji

A Swiss man died while hiking Mount Fuji after losing consciousness, marking the second fatality in a week on the popular mountain. The 58-year-old man, identified as Bernhard Sutter, was resuscitated but pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Meanwhile, a 99-year-old Japanese woman, Tome Sagawa, was rescued after being injured and spending a night in a mountain hut. Mount Fuji, a challenging trek that takes between five to ten hours, has seen increased safety incidents, particularly among unprepared hikers. In response, Japan has implemented stricter access regulations, including daily caps on climbers and fees for using trails, to manage the influx of tourists and protect the environment.

Why It Matters

Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest peak, has transitioned from a serene pilgrimage site to a popular hiking destination, attracting over 200,000 climbers annually. The mountain’s challenging conditions have led to fatalities, prompting authorities to tighten regulations on access and hiking practices. In 2024, there were nine deaths on the mountain, highlighting concerns about safety among climbers, particularly those inadequately equipped for the trek. The introduction of climbing fees and daily caps aims to enhance safety and reduce environmental damage caused by overcrowding and irresponsible hiking behavior.
