Montreal officials will commemorate the 36th anniversary of the Polytechnique massacre today, where 14 women were killed in an anti-feminist attack by Marc Lépine on December 6, 1989. The tragedy prompted changes in Canadian gun laws and increased awareness regarding violence against women, leading to the establishment of December 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. A ceremony will occur on Mount Royal, featuring the lighting of 14 beams to honor the victims, with a 15th beam added last year for all murdered women. Representatives from Polytechnique Montréal will also lay white roses at the memorial plaque, inviting the public to pay their respects.
