A 24-year-old monk, Justin Evans, known as Brother Ignatius, is presumed dead after disappearing from the Golgotha Monastery on Papa Stronsay, Orkney, shortly before midnight on April 11, 2026. Extensive searches have been conducted on Papa Stronsay and surrounding islands, particularly along the shorelines, with Police Scotland and local agencies involved. Inspector David Hall has stated that there are currently no indications of suspicious circumstances surrounding his disappearance. The Diocese of Aberdeen expressed deep sadness over Evans’s presumed death and described him as humble and charitable. The monastery, part of the Redemptorist Community, has faced challenges in recent years, including a Vatican investigation that led to the community’s removal from the diocese in 2024.

Why It Matters

The disappearance of Justin Evans highlights the isolation and risks associated with living in remote religious communities. Such communities often operate outside the mainstream, leading to unique challenges in terms of safety and communication. The monastery’s history, including its founding by a traditionalist order and subsequent scrutiny from the Vatican, adds complexity to the situation. The ongoing search efforts underscore the community’s commitment to finding Evans and the emotional strain on his family and fellow monks during this difficult time.
