Researchers determine how much money can buy happiness for Canadians

Common wisdom suggests that money cannot buy happiness, but a new study indicates it comes with a hefty price tag. Researchers from Remitly, referencing a 2018 Purdue University study, calculated that happiness costs approximately $155,850 in Canada, placing the country 14th worldwide. The analysis utilized the Gallup Life Evaluation Index and adjusted local income figures to assess the purchasing power required for happiness. Iceland topped the list with a staggering cost of $163,579, followed by Australia, Switzerland, New Zealand, and the United States at $134,827. In Canada, major cities such as Victoria, Vancouver, and Toronto reported even higher happiness price points, ranging from $167,000 to $170,000. Interestingly, Slovenia was the only country where the average income could cover the happiness price, highlighting disparities in financial well-being across nations.

Why It Matters

Understanding the financial implications of happiness can shed light on broader economic conditions and quality of life in different countries. This study reveals significant gaps between average incomes and the costs associated with achieving satisfaction, which can inform policy decisions regarding income distribution and social welfare. Additionally, the findings underscore the varying levels of economic disparity globally, as seen in countries like Ecuador, where individuals would need to work for years to afford happiness. The data illustrates the importance of addressing income inequality to enhance overall life satisfaction.
