More than seven Chinese tourists and their driver tragically drowned when their van sank through the ice of Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest lake, after the ice broke. Divers recovered the bodies of eight individuals, while one tourist managed to escape. Authorities had previously warned that the official ice road was closed due to unsafe conditions, highlighting the unforgiving nature of the lake. An investigation into the incident has been initiated, with a criminal case opened.
