A 16-year-old Yamaji Wangi student from Y School in Mirrabooka has won a national NAIDOC t-shirt design competition, earning a $1,000 prize and recognition for her artwork. Paige’s design, inspired by the theme “50 Years of Deadly,” celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, highlighting the importance of community and connection. Her artwork features symbols such as hands, stars, and fire, representing care, knowledge, and storytelling. Since joining Y School, Paige has experienced significant personal growth and increased confidence, as noted by her principal and youth worker. The winning design will be featured on limited edition shirts worn by Y staff, volunteers, and supporters beyond NAIDOC Week, serving as a lasting tribute to First Nations culture.

Why It Matters

This story highlights the importance of supporting Indigenous youth and fostering creative expression. NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia. Competitions like this not only empower young artists but also promote awareness of Indigenous issues and culture within the broader community. Educational institutions such as Y School play a crucial role in providing alternative pathways for students who have faced challenges in mainstream education, enabling them to discover and develop their talents.
