Military and civilian leaders removed or resigned since Hegseth became defense secretary

At least 20 military generals, admirals, and civilian defense leaders have been dismissed or have resigned since Pete Hegseth took over as defense secretary at the start of the second Trump administration. High-ranking officers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, including some of the most decorated leaders, have been affected, with the top civilian leaders of both branches also ousted or resigning. Hegseth, prior to his appointment, was critical of military leaders he perceived as overly focused on diversity initiatives, stating that any officers involved in such efforts needed to be removed. Notably, the administration has seen a disproportionate removal of female and Black officers from promotion lists, with no active four-star women generals or admirals currently serving. Tensions have also led to resignations from key officials, including Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, who raised concerns over the removal of leaders crucial to military transformation efforts.

Why It Matters

This situation reflects ongoing shifts in military leadership and policy under the Trump administration, particularly in relation to diversity and inclusion within the armed forces. The dismissal of high-ranking officers may affect military readiness and the implementation of strategic initiatives aimed at modernizing the U.S. military. Historical patterns show that transitions in administration often lead to significant changes in military leadership, but the current wave of terminations is notable for its impact on diversity within the ranks, as well as the potential disruption to continuity in military operations and planning. These developments may have long-term implications for military morale and effectiveness.
