The migration route from West African nations to Spain experienced its deadliest year on record in 2024, with nearly 10,000 migrants disappearing at sea while trying to reach the Canary Islands. The majority of deaths occurred on the Atlantic route, making it the deadliest route in the world according to the aid group Caminando Fronteras. Mauritania became the main departure point to the Canary Islands in 2024, resulting in 6,829 deaths, while Senegal and Gambia remained launching points for migrants with 2,127 deaths recorded.
