Houthis attack two Saudi oil tankers in Red Sea with missiles and drones

Yemen’s Houthi movement has claimed responsibility for attacks on two Saudi oil tankers, Encela and Laylia, in the Red Sea, marking a notable escalation in their maritime campaign against commercial shipping. The group stated the vessels were targeted for allegedly violating a newly established naval blockade on Saudi Arabia. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree reported that the attacks involved ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as drones, resulting in fires on the ships and prompting nearly ten other vessels to alter their routes. There has been no immediate confirmation from Saudi authorities or the operators of the affected ships regarding the damage incurred. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) also reported that a tanker was struck by an unknown projectile in the same region, raising alarms about the safety of this critical trade route.

Why It Matters

The attacks on Saudi oil tankers highlight the escalating conflict in the Red Sea, a vital passage for global trade and energy supplies. The Houthis, aligned with Iran, have increased military actions against Saudi shipping in response to ongoing regional tensions. The declared blockade on Saudi-linked vessels poses significant risks to maritime security and could potentially disrupt oil flows in an already volatile market. Historically, the Red Sea has been a crucial artery for international commerce, and any threat to its security can have wide-ranging implications for global energy prices and trade dynamics.
